Grant guidance
Everything the panel reads, and everything it will not fund. Read this before you start an application; it is shorter than the form.
Who may apply
Members within five years of their doctorate, and members at any career stage working with a lived-experience co-applicant. Co-applicants need not be members. Your department may hold the award on your behalf, but the application is yours.
What we fund
Pilot studies. Co-produced research. Translation and interpretation costs. Participant payments. Transcription. Open-access fees for work already accepted. The unglamorous parts of a project that larger funders decline to itemise.
What we do not fund
Salaries of any kind. Equipment over £1,000. Conference attendance outside the travel bursary scheme. Work already completed. Overheads or institutional levies — the full award reaches the work.
How it is assessed
Two panel members read each application independently against three questions: would this happen anyway, is the amount right for the work, and is the plain-English summary honest. Scores are reconciled at the panel meeting. Where co-applicants permit, applications are read blind.
Reporting
One page within three months of the work finishing: what you did, what it cost, what you would do differently. No branding requirements, no logo placement, no press approval. We publish a one-line summary of every award.
Key dates
Round opens 6 January. Deadline 4 March at 17:00 — the form closes, there is no grace period. Panel meets 2 April. Decisions by 16 April. Travel bursaries are decided monthly and have no deadline.
